Deceased Name: Emma E. Owens
ROY - Emma E. Owens, 85, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2004, at Ogden Regional Medical Center.
She was born November 24, 1918 in Ogden, Utah, the daughter of Frithjof Emannuel Lofquist and Emma E. Iverson Lofquist Rose.
On May 13, 1935, she married Kenneth Clyde Owens in Ogden. Their marriage was solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple in 1985. She and her husband and family lived in Ogden and then moved to Roy 33 years ago.
She worked at the Ogden Poultry for 18 years. She was also a loving and devoted mother to five children whom she loved dearly.
She loved to bowl and was on a bowling league in Roy. She loved gardening and loved to plant flowers. Her yard was very beautiful with many colored flowers and a cute little fish pond in the backyard. She also loved her dogs.
She was a member of the Roy 8th Ward.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and she will be greatly missed.
She is survived by one son, Marv L. (Debbie) Owens, Frank Town, CO; one daughter, Linda (Val) Schultz, Roy; three daughters- in-law, Jean Owens, Ogden; Carolyn Owens, Roy; and Debbie Owens, Roy; 19 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Solvieg Knight, Ogden.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters, two brothers and four sons Kenneth L. Owens, Douglas L. Owens, Emmett L. Owens and Dennis L. Owens.
The family would like to thank the employees and staff at Crestwood Care Center and Ogden Regional Hospital (transition-unit) for their loving care of Emma. She had a special friend Lilly Albrect of Millville, Utah where the family used to live.
Mom, you are free at last, love Marv and Linda.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 30, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Myers Mortuary in Roy, 5865 South 1900 West. Friends may call on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Friday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services.
Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.

     Astin, James Sterling Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, James Sterling Astin, age 89, of Provo, passed away August 24, 2004, at his home. He was born September 15, 1914, in Hoytsville, Utah, the son of James Nephi Astin and Lois Hobson Astin. He had three brothers and three sisters: Wayne, John (deceased), Warren (Helen), Merle Schreiner (deceased), Lucile MacFarlane (deceased), and Marion Astin. He graduated from East High School at age 15, and from the University of Utah, majoring in mining and engineering. While serving in the British Mission, he was a member of a Missionary Quartet which expanded into the Millennial Chorus. In 1937, he married Inez Brewster in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with four children: Jim, Carolyn, Steve, and Gary. After graduation from the University of Utah, he worked for the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During WWII, his work was classified "vital defense" and he was assigned to the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory, Berkeley University, California, to the top secret Manhattan Project to develop the "bomb". After the war, he served in executive positions in several eastern electrical corporations. In 1968, his wife, Inez, died of cancer. In 1969, he married Doris Owens Kennedy in the Salt Lake Temple, and her children, Richard and Kathleen, were sealed to them. In 1969, he joined Brigham Young University to help develop the Information Retrieval System and served as Director of the Educational Media Department. Later, he served as Director of Budget and Fiscal Operations for the Harold B. Lee Library. In 1980, he and Doris were called as the pilot couple to serve in the England London Mission Office and proselyte as time permitted. After retirement, they enjoyed serving missions - 8 together - Sterling, having served 9, including his first mission as a young man. They also served 7 years in the baptistry of the Provo Temple, while working at BYU. His church service included temple worker, branch president, high councilor, ward and stake clerk, ward and stake music director and choir director, Sunday School president and teacher, and in several bishoprics. He was an accomplished electrical engineer, and spent many years designing switch gear equipment. He was also a designer, draftsman, and builder of several of his own homes, faithful church worker, musician, excellent fisherman, and baseball player. He and his wife together have 6 children, 31 grandchildren, and 30 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 30, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. in the Provo Sharon East Stake Center, 2400 North 1060 East, Provo., where the viewing will be held from 9-11 a.m. prior to services. Interment will take place at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery, 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City, Utah. Published in the Daily Herald on 8/29/2004.
